Stools Workshops

You have a choice of one-day workshops designed to give you an introduction to the craft. You will learn about the tools and materials needed for upholstery. The workshops are perfect if you want a taster into the world of upholstery and unleash your creative side.

You will be taught how to make one of our stylish stools. The stools are ideal for several uses, dressing table, desk, footstool, children’s rooms.

The size of our rectangular stool is 50cm wide x 40cm deep x 49cm high

The size of our circular stool is 46cm wide x 37cm deep x 49cm high

You will get to choose from either industrial hairpin legs or mid-century style splayed wooden legs on the rectangular stool. The circular stool comes with a round frame made from solid steel piping by our local blacksmith at Alcumlow Hall Forge 

For each stool you will be provided with the frame, legs and upholstery materials 

Depending on which stool design you choose there are various techniques you will learn;

Rectangular Stool:

  • Make an upholstered seat where you will be taught techniques like applying and stapling foam
  • Template your fabric, including measuring, cutting, stapling, and cutting round corners.
  • Make fabric piping and side panels and how to make and apply buttons too if this is part of your design.
  • Finish and fix the legs to your stool.

Circular Stool:

  • Make an upholstered seat where you will be taught techniques like applying and stapling foam.
  • Template your fabric, including measuring, cutting, stapling.
  • How to make a square/oval shape seat. You will be taught how to remove excess fabric, so your stool has a perfect smooth finish.
  • Finish and fix the legs to your stool.

We keep the class size to no more than six people so you will get lots out of the day. We supply you with all the tools & materials needed you just need to bring 1m of your own fabric suitable for upholstery use. If you need any help with fabric selection or advice on types of suitable fabric then please get in touch with us and we can point you in the right direction, or you can buy your fabric through us.

The workshops are held in our beautiful workshop, a converted Methodist Chapel, in Scholar Green nestled in the peaceful Cheshire countryside.

The course will start at 9am finishing at approximately 4.30pm or 5pm. Hot drinks are included throughout the day. You will need to bring your own packed lunch with you.

Our stools are both decorative and practical for personal use but also a lovely gift to be given to family or friends too.

You could attend the workshop and make the stool for yourself or buy it as an experience day for a creative loved one. If you are buying as a gift please leave their name in the ‘additional information section’ at the check out

What Will You Learn?

We supply you with the tools & materials for the course, you will just need to bring 1m of fabric.

Meet The Tutor 

You will be taught on the day by Emma, an experienced upholster and the Director of Semper Hopkins Upholstery (read Emma’s story here).

We keep the class size to no more than six people so you will get lots out of the day.

All the frames and materials for the course are prepared in house by Ian (Emma’s Dad).

Location

The workshop is held from our beautiful workshop a converted Chapel in Scholar Green, a peaceful setting in the Cheshire countryside.
