Can you Open Your Mind to New Ideas, Challenge your thoughts and Spark Conversation?

It is already 5 months into 2022… Where has this year gone already?

Normally by now, a lot of us have either stuck by our new year’s resolutions or they disappeared just around February time? I am happy to say this year I have definitely (so far) stuck to my resolutions and attempted to make time for myself.

I wanted to make it my goal for this year to make sure I keep myself grounded and don’t overwork myself. As many of you may know, it is easy to get swept up in the working parenting life and not always take time for ourselves. Although this year has already been a busy one, it has been spent doing the things I love.

I think it takes a lot to recognise that there is a problem and maybe you aren’t quite feeling yourself. If you are overworking and not getting enough sleep, you are setting yourself up for burn out. Getting valuable resting time, being able to eat balanced nutritious foods, and making time for exercise can make a world of difference to your outlook and I am so glad I have been able to make a change for the better.

Last month I was at my first TEDX talk in Northwich hosted by Catherine Sandland. I listened to ten inspirational ladies sharing their ideas and stories. It opened up my eyes to and ears to new ideas and I wanted to share three of the speakers’ stories.

How can space station lighting help us to stay healthy on earth?

Dr Shelley James is an international expert on light and health, a member of the International WELL Building Standard Advisory Board and Artist in Residence at the Bristol Eye Hospital. She is also a trained glass artist, electrician and lighting designer. After listening to Dr Shelly James at April’s Northwich TEDx Talk it reinforced the importance of how lighting can affect all aspects of your day. One of the points that stuck was that a bright burst of light on a morning can impact your energy levels.

I already love to walk, so most mornings I have been making a conscious effort to get out of bed and go for an early morning walk, even if it’s only for a short time. I can already feel the benefits on my energy levels. Can you make one small change to fit a burst of natural light into your morning routine? You can listen to her full TEDX talk here.

Just One Act

Cody Capore is an accidental entrepreneur who through her own battle with cancer came up with the idea of C-Lash, a false eyelash specifically for cancer and Alopecia patients. This wasn’t the second time I had heard Cody share her story, but this time it was even more brilliant and inspiring. My words won’t do it justice you can listen to it here. Whatever life throws in your way, what one act can you do to make a change? Her story truly inspired me to carry on taking one step at a time to achieve your goals and dreams no matter what life throws at you.

Let’s rethink writing

Alison Jones is the third speaker I wanted to share with you. She is founder of Practical Inspiration Publishing and host of The Extraordinary Business Book Club podcast and community. Do you often wake up in the middle of the night unable to get back to sleep? This is how Alison’s talk started and made my ear’s prick up, as I often do. I will wake up to go to the toilet, instead of getting back to sleep my mind will start wandering, and then come up with loads of ideas/thoughts sometimes work or other times day to day. Does this sound familiar? Her talk focused on exploratory writing as a way to overcome this. Listen to her full story here She suggested finding a time in the day (normally for a period of no longer than six minutes) with a rough notebook or scrap paper to write – not overthinking what you are writing but just let the words come out.   The idea is you will write what your subconscious is thinking and you may get one small nugget from it or none at all, but it’s a good exercise to do. I’m going to give this a go are you?

So, what are you going to do to challenge yourself for the rest of this year? Are you going to try out a new hobby, or perhaps push yourself out of your comfort zone in different ways? Take the chance to do something different, you will thank yourself… If you are interested in learning a new skill or craft, why not turn your hand to upholstery?
