Spend a creative day learning upholstery and handmaking a piece of furniture to take home.

Whether you’d love to make something beautiful for your home, fancy trying upholstery as a new hobby, or want to develop your existing skills, our small-group workshops give you a hands-on, enjoyable experience.

Our upholstery workshops run on selected midweek dates throughout the year from our beautiful converted chapel in Scholar Green, Cheshire, with a maximum of 8 people per workshop.

Full-day workshops start from £225 per person, with everything you need included. You don’t need to find a piece of furniture, source fabric or buy any tools before you come — we provide your furniture frame, upholstery materials, use of all tools and equipment, expert tuition and a choice of sustainable fabric. You simply need to turn up ready to create.

Choose a workshop based on the piece you’d love to make. Many of our workshops are suitable for complete beginners and we’ll guide you through every stage, so you can enjoy the experience and leave with a finished piece of furniture you’re proud of.

I’d like to try upholstery as a hobby

Start with Introduction to Upholstery, where you’ll learn the core tools, materials and techniques while making your own piece of furniture. You’ll leave with the foundations and confidence to start tackling small projects at home. It’s also a great way to find out whether upholstery is the hobby for you before investing in your own tools and equipment.

I want to keep learning and develop my skills

Already have some upholstery experience and want to keep going? Our Upholstery Open Studio – coming in 2027 will give you access to our studio, workbenches, tools and equipment so you can bring your own suitable project and work independently, without having to invest in everything yourself.

If you want to learn a specific new technique, our Upholstery Skills Workshops offer step-by-step tuition in skills including piping, pleats, square buttoning and deep buttoning.

What can I expect on the day?

Our workshops are relaxed, practical and hands-on. You’ll be guided through your project step by step, working at your own pace and learning as you make.

Come on your own, with a friend or family member — you’ll leave at the end of the day with your finished piece of furniture ready to take home.

Making a button at an upholstery workshop

Do I need to buy fabric?

No. Your fabric is included in the workshop price, so there’s no need to work out what type of fabric to buy, how much you need or whether it’s suitable for upholstery.

You’ll choose from our carefully selected range of sustainable upholstery fabrics, and we’ll have everything prepared ready for you on the day.

Who will teach me?

Your workshop will be taught by Emma Semper Hopkins, founder of Semper Hopkins and an experienced upholsterer and workshop facilitator.

Our workshops are designed to give you plenty of opportunity for individual guidance and support throughout the day, so you can work at your own pace and build confidence as you make.
